RIVERS and MOUNTAINS

This series of small (A6) watercolour paintings were made in response to walking in the Seven mountain range in Bergen, Norway in 2019. Alongside gathering marks in my sketch book I thought about poetry. The final paintings were developed in my studio.  Each one in this series of eight has a line of poetry attached to it from Ryokan (1758-1831).

Rivers and Mountains.

I never longed for a wilder side of life.

Rivers and mountains were my friends.

Clouds consumed my shadow where I roamed,

And birds pass high above my resting place.

 Straw sandals in snowy villages,

A walking stick in spring,

I sought a timeless truth: the flower’s glory

Is just another from of dust.

 Ryokan (1758-1831)
