AT SEA AGAIN 2018
a memorial artwork depicting a sea burial off the coast of Cornwall.
Lamorna Village Hall, July 2018
At Sea Again is a memorial artwork in the form of a short 6 minute film and a letter (written for conference Remember Me: The Changing Face of Memorialisation, Hull University, 2018) depicting the scattering of my son’s ashes off the coast of Cornwall. The sea in the film has become a haunted memorial ground; the place I go to visit Jack. I imagine him residing in its deep waters and feel it is a space communication takes place between us. The exhibition sets out to explore individual burial narratives and places where communication takes place between the dead and the living. Creative practice can have the ability to connect us to the dead at times when we are often feeling lost and disconnected. Working with ephemeral materials such as dust and human ashes I work with how we remember our dead as a living active process. The exhibition installation acted as a provocation where audiences were invited to enter the space to share their own burial stories.
